Top 8 Finals System

Have been a little bored today so have been having a look at a finals system I created a few years ago. I always like the old top 4 and top 5 models that allowed the top teams to keep their 2nd chance all the way to the Grand Final if they kept winning. The biggest downfall is the finals would run an extra week and the team that wins the Major Semi would have only played 1 game in a month but that was the same in the old top 5 as well.

I fully understand the economics of a top 8 systems but it really rewards
Some poor sides who finish 6 to 8 spot.
Top 5.
1 gets a rest.
2 plays 3 loser survives
4 plays 5 lower gone
Teams 1, 2 and 3 all get second chances

1,3,5,7,9 in one top 5 system
2,4,6,8,10 in other top 5 system

I like the conference idea. I tried to make a mock one, semi-mimicking the NFL. So teams were split into 4 divisions :

Final week 1
* winner of each division has week off
* teams 2 + 3 play each other in elimination match

Finals week 2
* Winner week 1 plays winner of the division
* Loser eliminated

Finals week 3
* Division A week 2 winner vs Division B week 2 winner
* Division A week 2 winner vs Division D week 2 winner
* losers eliminated

Final
* winners from week 3 play for premiership

Not sure if it's "ideal" though because every finals match is elimination - i.e. no "losers" get a second change, regardless of where they finished in the regular season. Also, it becomes more like a top 12 so without more teams, its not great..

Nrl gets the gate from finals, clubs get regular season. Top 16 has a better chance that top 5 despite 5 being the better option.

There has only been 3-4 teams In This comp all year anyway. Just do a full season everyone plays everyone 2x and first past the post wins

Like the idea but the playing pool is just not there. In fact 16 might be too many.
Make it a 14 team Como and a top 7 with the top team having a week off.

Why couldn't the NRL run a top 5 format, forgo the week of finals and top the season up to be a proper H&A comp? Surely that would be worth more to them...

Yes but could you imagine the number of games that teams would be out of contention for the top 5.
