(X+2)÷(4-X) +2 = 2÷3

This is my son homework for yr 9.
We get answer x=6 but book says x=22.
Which we have worked out how to get but both working appears right and we don't know why.
Depends on if you x by 3 or 4-X first.

Thanks in advance

Red .....hopes this help ....bimdas

brackets
to the power of
multiplication
division
addition
subtraction

What I have learnt is to wait until the kids have a example because you don't want to teach the wrong way as it gets confusing

As my Maths teacher use to say "There is more than one way to skin a cat Happy"

(6+2)/(4-6)+2=2/3
(8)/(-2)+2=.6667
-4+2=.6667
-2=.6667 nope x does not equal 6

(22+2)/(4-22)+2=2/3
(24)/(-18)+2=.6667
-1.3333+2=.6667
.6667=.6667 Yep x=22

The order you perform calculations is Order of precedence. Brackets first (). Then multiplication and division followed by add and subtract.

If a train is going from a to b at 40km per hour

And the temperature that day is 40 degrees

What is the colour of the train drivers shoes

(x+2) / (4-x) + 2 = 2/3
(x+2) + (8-2x) = 8/3 – 2x/3 [multiply all elements by (4-x) to get rid of denominator on left side)
-x + 10 = 8/3 -2x/3
22/3 = x/3
22 = x
It's a bit of bodmas plus rationalisation of the equation.

It's BIDMAS if you use the term "indices" or BODMAS if you use the term "orders" but I'm guessing you're talking about something completely different to maths.

Happy was great at maths ….he had to take his shoes and sox off to count to 20...that's what they do in Qld,why do you reckon they get around barefooted..

Yeah was referring to indices ......(bodemas) is Geo

lol there is no indices..so therefor coiventy is 100% correct..it is BODMAS..which = happy proves again he is no smarter than a 5th Grader..

Thanks all for the help . Think I got it now.
Young fella is waiting for school for the teacher to tell him so doesn't care.
It annoyed me and the wife though.
Funny thing is my daughter's tutor who is a maths teacher got it wrong also.
Definitely think I've reached my ceiling of being able to help him .
