Should we make a play for him. It is a huge risk, but with risk could come great reward.

JAMAL Idris may have played his last game for Penrith.

The former Test and Origin superstar has been approached by rival NRL clubs and the Sunday Telegraph understands the Panthers are amenable to granting Idris an early release from his contract, which expires at the end of 2016.

Idris suffered a ruptured ACL injury last month, ruling him out for the season.

The 24-year-old is undergoing rehabilitation following his knee reconstruction.

He has also battled alcohol issues and depression, which has hindered his ability to fulfil has massive potential on the field.

Penrith have rising stars Waqa Blake, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak and George Jennings in their squad, so can adequately cover the centre position that Idris occupies.

Idris takes up a significant amount of Penrith’s salary cap, and should the club consider releasing him early, it will free them up to retain off-contract stars or poach other players.

Penrith’s general manager, Phil Gould, released a statement on Sunday confirming that the Panthers would not stand in Idris’s way if he chose to leave early.

Panthers General Mangaer Gus Gould says the club will support any decision Idris makes.

“Our priority here is for Jamal to be healthy and happy. Whether [his] future involves Panthers/rugby league is totally up to Jamal,” Gould said.

Idris joined Penrith from the Gold Coast with much fanfare last year.

Early in the season, he was stood down from the club to deal with his personal problems.

Following a stint in a rehabilitation program, Idris bounced back to fight his way back into first grade and finish the season strongly. At the start of this year, Idris underwent spinal surgery, removing veterbra and fixing nerve damage in his back.

He returned to the field but in the round six clash against Manly on April 11, Idris tore the anterior cruciate ligament on his knee, an injury that requires full reconstruction and generally sidelines players for the entire season.

On his day, Idris can win games single-handedly, which is why he was chosen to play for NSW in 2010 and Australia in 2011.

Idris won the 2009 Dally M rookie of the year while he was at the Bulldogs and was touted as a better prospect than Israel Folau.

The Panthers shocked the competition last year by making the semi-finals, but they have made an average start to 2015, winning just four of nine games."

Is he off contract? Would be a great signing for us.

Didn't he retire?

Spends more time off the park than on to the last 2 season but yeah that hair..

If we could get him back to form I'd be up for it.
But I wouldn't want us spending too much money. We already have enough salary cap money on players affected by injury who can't give us our money's worth.

Mangaer???

Good to see another quality article from the Tele.

What are we paying him with, magic beans?

He is a right centre, and we need one, penrith might be paying some of his 2016 contract, which would be handy.

I don't think Taylor said no signings till 2017 out of choice. I'd say the cap is a shambles. Lawrence is rumored to be earning 650K next yr thanks to backloading.

Taylor alluded to the possibility of entering the market next year, and certainly the year after. IF we have enough space under our cap, then Idris would be a sensational pick up.
But possibly even more important in my mind is a really tough no nonsense back rower who hits hard in defence. We got steamrolled on Friday night, and that won't change with our current roster.

2nd rower absolutely essential. we aren't too bad at centre now that we can rely on hoeter for a year or two to play there.

nofo, naiqama wings. simona and hoeter centres with Seve backing up if he can pick up where he left off before his injury.

also could have patty next year. so buying a really good centre for 2016 might be money better spent on our 2nd row.

Too many kids in the backs. Need some experience in there to show them the way.

We had out chance with Cowboys' Ethan Lowe and came up empty.

Idris would be a really good signing but we would need Lawrence to go to UK. He is a right centre, he brings size to a part of the field where we don't have it with Moses and Naquiama.

People are saying he is injury prone but before this year he has averaged over 20 games with a min of 15 for the last 6 years so that isn't injury prone.

He is big make meters and draws in defenders so gives space to fast back. He is also a chance to play in the backrow so flexibility

Tedesco would love to run off him.
