In a positive sign for Wests Tigers, winger Taniela Tuiaki has been given the green light to take the next important step in his recovery.

Tuiaki will now start running without assistance as he attempts to overcome a shocking ankle injury.

The powerhouse winger has been sidelined since suffering the broken ankle in round 21 last year. He has been working very hard under the eye of Wests Tigers Rehabilitation Manager Andrew Leeds.

“Taniela was advised on Monday by the specialist to bump up the load of his running. We will see how he responds to that over the next month,’’ Leeds said.

“He has been running in a harness which is partial weight bearing. We are now going to see how he tolerates full weight bearing running.”

Leeds confirmed that a return date or round for Tuiaki remains indefinite.

Round 12 of the Telsta NRL premiership saw the Wests Tigers return to traditional home ground Campbelltown Sports Stadium to take on the 7th placed New Zealand Warriors. Both teams were coming off the back of solid last round wins, the Tigers returning to the winners list with a solid win over Newcastle while the Warriors held off South Sydney in New Zealand. The Tigers entered the match with an unchanged lineup while the Warriors lost several key players in prop Sam Rapira, Captain and lock Michael Luck and stand-off James Maloney. The Warriors however boasted an impressive recent win record against the Tigers so it was important for the Tigers to hit the Warriors hard and work on improving their form from last week. So were the Tigers up for the challenge?

Fullback Wade McKinnon has been granted a release from his NRL contract with the New Zealand Warriors.

The club was approached by McKinnon's manager Alan Gainey this week seeking a release from his contract which was due to end after the 2011 NRL season.

Vodafone Warriors chief executive Wayne Scurrah said McKinnon (29) wanted to leave immediately to take up a new contract with Wests Tigers.

"We were committed to Wade staying with us for the rest of his contract but he wants to play first-grade football regularly and recently he hasn’t been able to do that here with Lance Hohaia firmly established at fullback in our NRL side," said Scurrah.

Round 11 of the Telstra NRL premiership saw the Wests Tigers travel to Newcastle on the back of a short turnaround to take on the Newcastle Knights in a must-win clash with both sides currently out of the top 8. Newcastle entered the match coming off a strong win against the Sydney Roosters while the Tigers preparation was anything but smooth, coming off the back of what can only be described as a “heartless” 50-10 flogging at the hands of arch-rivals South Sydney last Sunday. Neither side was at full strength for this match, with the Tigers losing Blake Ayshford and Liam Fulton against Souths to join Keith Galloway, Tim Moltzen and Taniela Tuiaki on the sidelines.

Rugby league fans on forums can be harsher than judges on reality TV, but Wests Tigers veteran Daniel Fitzhenry is targeted more than almost any other player in the NRL.

Even when he was a premiership player at the Tigers in 2005, Fitzhenry copped a pasting from supporters, and things have only gotten worse this season since he returned from the English Super League.
