Round 25 of the Telstra NRL premiership saw the Wests Tigers return to Leichhardt Oval for their final home match of 2010 to take on the salary cap cheating Melbourne Storm. The Tigers were playing for a top 2 finish while the Storm were playing for pride only. Coming off the back of an impressive 20-18 win over the Eels last week, the Tigers entered this match boosted by the return of specialist fullback Wade McKinnon, however this was tempered by the loss of backrower Liam Fulton who was ruled out with a bad cork and replaced by the man who boasts arguably the best 6-pack in the NRL, Mark Flanagan who moved to the bench with Simon Dwyer promoted to the starting side. The Storm were also dealt a big blow, losing 5/8 Brett Finch to a hand injury, strike centre Greg Inglis and damaging backrower/centre Sika Manu.

This is yet another move for the talented rookie who was being touted as a halfback for the Wests Tigers first grade side during the offseason by many fans. Round 13 of the Telstra NRL premiership saw the Wests Tigers travel to ANZ Stadium at Homebush to take on the Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs for the second time this season. Round 1 resulted in a comprehensive 24-4 win to the Bulldogs as an injury depleted Tigers side fumbled and bumbled their way through the game to end a 4 match winning streak. Fast forward to round 13 and the Tigers were sitting in 6th spot on the competition table while the Bulldogs had lost their last 4 games in a row and were languishing in 13th position and under all sorts of pressure.

Round 11 of the Telstra NRL premiership saw the Wests Tigers travel to Newcastle on the back of a short turnaround to take on the Newcastle Knights in a must-win clash with both sides currently out of the top 8. Newcastle entered the match coming off a strong win against the Sydney Roosters while the Tigers preparation was anything but smooth, coming off the back of what can only be described as a “heartless” 50-10 flogging at the hands of arch-rivals South Sydney last Sunday. Round 1 saw the Wests Tigers cop a pummelling from the Roosters to the tune of 44-32 in stifling conditions. Both teams entered the match on 8 competition points and facing several injury concerns. With the Tigers lacking a genuine halfback, this saw regular hooker and captain Robbie Farah move to halfback for today’s game in an effort to get more quality ball to Benji Marshall, while backrower Liam Fulton moved to hooker and big Todd Payten was a late inclusion to the starting side with Mark Flanagan dropping back to the bench and Junior Moors dropping out of the side. Western Suburbs halfback and captain Nathan Waters was named on the interchange bench for his first grade debut. If they were going to win today, they needed to reverse this trend. |
